Recognise romance-scam patterns

One awkward message proves very little. A pattern matters: intense affection very early, a story that always prevents video calls or meeting, pressure to move off the app immediately, inconsistent details, or a request to keep the relationship secret. Someone can be charming and still be unsafe.

Be especially careful when a new romantic connection asks for money, gift cards, crypto, investment help, account access, a loan, travel fees, medical bills or an emergency payment. Never send money to prove love.

Stay on the platform while trust is still forming. Do not share passwords, one-time codes, banking details, identity documents, home address or intimate images with someone you have not independently verified. Use a reverse-image search when a profile feels inconsistent, and do not let a dramatic story rush your decision.

• Have a live video call before planning travel or intimacy
• Tell a trusted person what is happening
• Meet in a public place and arrange your own transport
• Keep screenshots, usernames, numbers and payment requests
• Pause before clicking links or sending documents

Stop sending money and stop negotiating. Save evidence, block the account and report the profile through the dating service. If money or identity information was shared, contact your bank or payment provider immediately and report the fraud to the relevant authorities in your country. A trusted friend can help you take the next step without shame.

If someone threatens, blackmails or stalks you, do not meet them to ‘sort it out’. Preserve the messages and contact local emergency or victim-support services.

A genuine person may be disappointed by a boundary, but they can respect it. A scammer often escalates: guilt, urgency, anger, a new emergency or promises that disappear if you do not pay. You are allowed to pause a relationship while you verify the facts. Your heart and your bank account both deserve protection.
